Based in Rossendale, Lancashire, Sarah Mae Francis is a metal sculpture artist whose journey with raw materials began at just 16 years old. Taught to weld by her dad through a brief, hands-on initiation - giving her a five-second lesson and saying, “there’s a welder, there’s a grinder, crack on” - she immediately threw herself into the craft.
While Sarah’s artistic creative drive surfaced early through drawing and painting, her true passion lay in dynamic, three-dimensional sculpture. Confronted by traditional high school and college programs that couldn’t teach her chosen discipline, she took charge of her own development. She taught herself the intricacies of metalwork, drawing relentless inspiration from fellow metal sculptors and her deep love for animals.
A core philosophy of Sarah’s work is giving forgotten objects a vibrant new life. In almost all of her creations, she incorporates vintage tools - items that once held deep value to someone, but were eventually pushed aside by technological evolution and viewed as scrap. She builds on the timeless belief that “One mans trash is another mans treasure”, transforming discarded history into high-energy artwork that commands attention.
